January 29: National Day of Transgender Visibility

January 29 is a landmark in the fight for human rights and respect to gender identity. In January 2004, 27 transgender people launched the campaign “Transgender and Respect” in the National Congress. It was the first national campaign idealized and created by transsexual activists for promoting respect and citizenship.

“This historical date happened thanks to the fight of transsexuals that made history and I thank them all. This symbolic day moves me a lot because it’s the day of resistance. It’s a day to remember the ones that passed away and the fight of the ones that are still here. I remember all the ones who have to work really hard everyday to survive here. Not even during transgender visibility month they spare us of seeing men on TV mocking transvestites with demeaning impersonations and thanks to a black woman, these things are in the past now. They are always trying to kill us and apologizing later, I didn’t know that. I don´t have any more patient for such things. We need to fight against this murdering system that kills transvestites and transsexuals everyday. I pay my sincere respect to the entire transsexual community in Brazil. We’ll keep on fighting for citizenship and respect”. (Maria Eduarda Aguiar, Selem Soares’ lawyer, a character in our movie  @digameunomeofilme)

In the words of the wonderful song by Léo Áquilla  @leonoraaquillaoficial, RESPECT THE TRANSVESTITES!
